What are average interior painting prices?

If you are looking to paint your home you are probably researching average interior painting prices. You might be gathering quotes from professional painting companes or considering a 'do it yourself' project.

average house painting costs

Before you make your decision here are a few things to consider about each option.

Hiring a Professional

Hiring a pro (the right pro!) is a great time saver when painting the home. If you go this route, you can expect to pay:

Labor Costs of about $.70 per square foot of wall/ceiling space. To figure this, multiply the perimeter of the room by the height..then, multiply by $.60.  This will get you an approximate labor cost if there's not a lot of repair work needed.

A 12x12x8 room will have about 384 square feet of wall space.

384' x $.70 = $270 (268.80)

Paint for this room will run about $.20 per square foot of wall space.  This will add about $70 to the price above if using a Benjamin Moore high quality paint.

Then, sundries, or supplies will be added. They typical cost for this will be about $50 ($.13 per square foot) for a typical room. These supplies include: roller covers, tape, plastic, caulk, tray liners, etc..

*The prices that are listed for paint and sundries will vary and also are purchased at a discount by the contractor

The total cost for painting an interior will run about $1.02 per square foot (about $390 for the for a 12x12 room) of wall space being painted. A professional painting contractor will be able paint an average bedroom like we listed above in only half a day.  The job will include a labor warrantry and a manufacturer's warranty.

Doing it Yourself

Obviously, you save about $.70 per square foot on labor when you do the painting yourself. The trade off is your time. Many homeowners take 2-3 times the amount of time a professional painter will need.

Paint will cost the homeowner about $.30 per square foot and sundries about $.40 per square foot, since roller handles and poles will need to be purchased in addition to the normal supplies. The total price to do it yourself will run about $.70-1.00 per square foot of wall space plus your time.

Do it yourself or hire a pro? It all comes down to what's important to you. A pro will get in, get out and stand behind the work  Doing it yourself will save you some money, but will cost you in time. Also, a pro will do much nicer work and offer a warranty.
